皆さんにお披露目します.

最後の長文は,XP-jp へ一言お願いできませんか,というリクエス
トへの返事で,日本滞在時の散文です.かなり難しい英語だったの
ですが,がんばって試訳を付けました.

We felt so very welcomed by so many people in Japan. Even though it was a
strange place for us in many ways, it felt like home when we were with
XPers.

Walking Chinzan-so

I am walking into Chinzan-so. I am handed a map showing how to get to the
pagoda. I fold the map and put it in my pocket without looking at it. "I
won't miss the pagoda if I just keep walking."

I walk through a leafy tunnel over a red bridge. I walk slowly past the koi
pond. A mallard drake jostles for position with the fish. Back into the
trees and up dozens of steps. I am a little winded. I am paying attention to
my nose (how many kinds of trees are here?) and my thighs (how can I be this
out of shape?). Every ten or twenty steps a Shinto good luck god deserves a
moment of contemplation (or else what? I wonder).

Around a corner, the trees get thicker. THERE is the pagoda. Brown,
weathered, wide, and mostly concealed by the overhanging trees. I had
forgotten about the pagoda. The garden has drawn me in. The initial sight of
the pagoda is a thump in the chest. I stand stone still.

Around to the far side of the pagoda, out of the trees, sunlight making me
blink. Now I can see the whole pagoda. I stand at the bottom admiring the 3D
puzzle of wood pieces making up the first level. From this angle I can
vaguely see that the other two levels are just as sophisticated.

Benches beckon twenty meters on. Reaching them, I expect to see the whole
structure. No. I get my first clear view of the top two stories. Low growing
pines conceal the base. A moment's frustration evaporates as I hear the
rhythm of the symmetry of the design.

More benches, concealed until now, appear another twenty meters on. Sitting
on the shade-cooled stone, the morning sun throws the whole pagoda into a
sawtooth of lights and darks. Now I can see the whole. I am finally grateful
at having seen the parts from so many angles and in so many lights.

平鍋試訳

椿山荘を歩く

椿山荘の中に歩いていく.塔への順路が示された地図を手渡される.地図は見ないで
を折り畳んでポケットにしまう.「歩き続ければ塔は見すごさないはず.」

赤い橋の上にかかる木の葉のトンネルを抜ける.鯉がおよぐ池をゆっくりと歩いて過
ぎる.鴨が魚を取る場所を競って押しあっている.林に戻り数十段の階段を上る.少
し息が切れる.鼻と腿を意識する(幾種類の木がここには生えているのだろう? どう
してこんなに太ったんだろう?).神道の幸運の神がある.10か20段登る度に,時間を
取って熟視するに値する.

角を曲がると林が深くなる.*そこに*,塔がある.茶色で,雨風で色あせ,幅広く,
そして,覆いかかる木々にほとんど隠されるようだ.塔のことは忘れていた.塔が私
を導き入れたようだ.塔の最初の光景が胸を打った.わたしは石のように静かに立っ
ていた.

塔を遠く周回し,林の外に出ると日光がまぶしい.ようやく塔全体が見える.
塔の下に立つ.一階を形作る木片の3D パズルに感嘆する.この角度から
上の2つの階も同様に洗練されていることがなんとなくわかる.

ベンチが20m先で待っている.そこにたどり着くと,全体の構造が見えるのだろうと
期待する.違っていた.ここで初めて,上の2つの階がはっきりと見える.
低く生えた松が,1階を隠す.その意匠の対称性が持つリズムに,一瞬の不満が蒸発する

今まで隠れていたベンチが,さらに20m先に現れる.日陰で冷たくなった石に腰を下
ろすと,朝の日差しが塔全体を光と影の鋸歯に見せる.ようやく塔全体が見える.
既に部分部分を幾つもの角度,幾つもの光で見ていたことに,最後になって感謝する.
